Hongkong, 20th. October, 1898.
I have the honour to request the authority
of His Excellency the Offiaer Administering the Government to call
for tenders for the construction of the road from Wanchai Gap to
Yong We Chung Gap for which a Vote of $10,000 is taken in next
year's Estimates. This work has, I understand, already met with
the approval of the Secretary of State. We bave at present a large
force of men at Wong Nee Chung Reservoir which is nearing comple-
tion, and I an anxious to keep this labour force together. The
completion of work on the Chamberlain Road and also on the road
from Plantation Road to Magazine Gap is setting a lot of men free.
It will take a month to arrange a contract and I can settle with the accepted tenderer to await first payment till January. It seems a pity to lose the good weather of the last two months of the year
for a work of this nature.
The Honourable
The Colonial Secretary.
